De elegantste van het stel, en dat kun je zien.

De 280 CE is de coupéversie van wat liefhebbers de Strich-Acht noemen, gebouwd in de jaren zeventig. De lijn is getekend door Paul Bracq, dezelfde man die de Pagode ontwierp, en dat zie je terug in de rust van de vormen.

Wat deze wagen bijzonder maakt, zie je pas als de ruiten omlaag gaan. Er zit geen stijl tussen de voor- en achterruit, waardoor de hele zijkant open is. Voor een fotograaf is dat een geschenk: hij kijkt van buiten dwars door de wagen heen, met jou erin en het licht eromheen. Foto's die met een gewone auto simpelweg niet te maken zijn.

Het dak ligt lager dan bij de sedans, wat hem een sportieve houding geeft, zonder dat het rijden er minder comfortabel van wordt. Van binnen vind je hout, leer en het rustige comfort waar Mercedes in die jaren om bekend stond.

The 280 CE is the coupé version of the car enthusiasts call the Strich-Acht, built through the seventies. Its lines were drawn by Paul Bracq, the same designer behind the Pagoda, and you can see it in the calm of the shapes.

What makes this car special only reveals itself once the windows come down. There is no pillar between the front and rear glass, so the entire side of the car opens up. For a photographer it is a gift: they can look straight through the car from outside, with you inside and the light all around you. Photographs that an ordinary car simply cannot give you.

The roofline sits lower than on the saloons, which gives the car a sporting stance, while the ride stays every bit as comfortable. Inside you will find wood, leather and the quiet comfort Mercedes was known for in those years.
